NGC and PMG Offer Special Labels and Designations for the 2019 Edition of the 5th Series Chinese RMB
Posted on 8/26/2019
The People’s Bank of China has announced that three new coins and four new notes will be issued on August 30, 2019. The coins and notes comprise the 2019 edition of the 5th Series of the Chinese RMB and boast upgraded security features and enhanced design characteristics. To celebrate the new issues, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) have created new special labels that echo the attractive floral and geometric designs on each coin and note.
The upcoming release consists of coins with the denominations of 1 jiao, 5 jiao and 1 yuan as well as notes with the denominations of 1 yuan, 10 yuan, 20 yuan and 50 yuan. (The updated 100 yuan note in this series was released in 2015.)
The new issues have several major design changes. All three coins use different typeface for the numerals of the denominations on the obverse, and the floral patterns are now smaller on the reverse. The diameter of the new 1 yuan coin has been narrowed from 25 mm to 22.25 mm, while the material for 5 jiao has been changed from bronze-plated steel to nickel-bonded steel, which gives the formerly yellow-colored coin a silver appearance.
Compared with the notes currently in circulation, the new notes will have brighter colors and adjusted designs with more advanced security features. Printed in optically variable magnetic inks (OVMI), the numerals in the denominations will change in color with a bright band rolling up and down when viewed from different angles. Other new features include additional decorative line patterns and the removal of tactile lines on the front side of all four notes. These adjustments will make new notes more difficult to counterfeit as well as make them consistent with the 2015 edition of the 100 yuan note.
The new NGC and PMG special labels feature geometric flowers that correspond to the floral designs on each coin and note:
- 1 Jiao Coin: Orchid
- 5 Jiao Coin: Lotus
- 1 Yuan Coin: Chrysanthemum
- 1 Yuan Note: Orchid
- 10 Yuan Note: Chinese Rose
- 20 Yuan Note: Lotus
- 50 Yuan Note: Chrysanthemum
- 100 Yuan Note: Plum Blossom
These special labels will provide an enhanced presentation for the new coins and notes. Each NGC label is available for no additional fee, while the PMG labels will be available with no additional fee until December 31, 2020.
Coins and notes received by NGC and PMG within the first 30 days of their release are eligible for NGC and PMG's popular EARLY RELEASES and FIRST RELEASES designations.
